While we use the Simple Past as the telling time in stories, Past Progressive is used to show that an action was going on (past progressive) and while something else happened (simple past). Train this difference here.

The story of the Trojan horse   
 
Be careful of Greeks bringing gifts.   
This saying comes from the legend of the Trojan Horse.  
 
As the story goes  ...... 
A long time ago, there was an old city-state on the coast of Turkey, across the sea from Sparta.  
This city was named Troy.  
The people (to enjoy)their time, when suddenly something  (to happen)
Paris, the son of the Trojan king (to love)Helen, the beautiful daughter of the Spartan king. When the Spartans (to sleep)he  (to kidnap)Helen and  (to bring)her to Troy. 
Of course the Spartans (to come)to get Helen back. 
The Trojans  (to protect)their city by a high wall (to build)around the city.  
There  (to be)many doors in this wall,  but the Trojans  (to guard)these doors with many men. 
So it  (to rain)arrows onto the Spartans when they  (to try)to break into the city. 
The Greek warriors had been trying to breach the wall around Troy for about ten years.  
The Greeks could not find a way in, and the Trojans did not seem able to drive the Greeks away.  
Odysseus, a Greek general, had an idea.  
While the other Greeks  (to try)to break through, he (to make)a beautiful and huge wooden horse. 
Then he made all the attackers leave, like they had given up the attack and left the horse outside the gate.  
The rest of the army sailed away, but he and thirty of his men  (to wait)inside he wooden horse. 
When the Trojans saw that the Greek army  (to leave), they  (to rush)out of the city and  (to thank)their gods. 
The Trojans found the horse and kept it as a sign for their victory.  
They even took it into their city and had a huge victory party with lots of wine.  
While the Trojans  (to have)their party Odysseus and his men  (to wait)inside the horse.  
During the night, when all the Trojans (to sleep), Odysseus  (to open)the horse and  (to climb)out of the horse and (to open)the city doors. 
The Greek army had returned and (to wait)in front of the gates and entered the city. 
This was the end of Troy.
