Chapter 2: A strange place 
 
One day I   (to walk)down the countryside and  (to get)to an interesting stone-statue. It looked like a white round circle with a circular hole in the middle, more or less like a millstone.  Just this wouldn’t have been strange, but I  (to find)it in the middle of a small forest, out of view of all the other things, and while all the rest looked old and shabby this stone seemed to be brand-new and  was shining like a bright lamp in a dark place. Why   (to have)someone put it here? And why (question form /the birds / not / to sing)around this place? 
Back at the hotel I  (to ask)the Weeds for the story of the stone statue. But after some unexpected moments of cold silence and puzzled looks Mr Weeds only  (to tell)me that they  (not/to know)anything about that mysterious thing and it must have been placed there a long time before they had arrived in town. The cold atmosphere between the Weeds and me stayed for the whole evening, and as I didn’t know what I had done wrong I  (to go)to bed early.
